Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), typically Type 1. They are contagious, and can be contracted through sharing drinks or kissing someone with an active cold sore.
Cold sores present as small blisters and will ulcerate over the next few days. They may recur in times of stress, illness, or exposure to extreme weather conditions.
Cold sores typically resolve within one week. Over-the-counter products can be purchased to alleviate any discomfort and shorten the lifespan.
