A gap, or diastema, between the front teeth can form due to a variety of factors. A gap, or diastema, may be caused by excess spacing along the maxillary dental arch, due to periodontal disease, a thick frenum muscular attachment, or due to habits such as tongue thrust, thumb sucking, or pacifier use.
Some patients enjoy the appearance of their diastema. For others, it is an esthetic concern, and can be resolved with orthodontic treatment or with bonding.
