Open bites can be caused by a pacifier or thumb-sucking habit, or by excess vertical growth of the posterior maxilla. Over time, a malocclusion develops in which the front teeth do not touch while the back teeth are in full contact while closing the jaw. The upper front teeth may be slanted outward.
An open bite should be corrected, as it impedes effective chewing, speech, breathing, and swallowing. An open bite may cause a lisp and a tongue thrust; the tongue must move forward into the space while talking or to create a seal when swallowing.
Open bites can be treated orthodontically using braces or clear aligners. In severe cases, treatment may require a combination of surgery and orthodontics. Your orthodontic professional will discuss treatment options with you during your consultation appointment.Â
