DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BRACES AND INVISALIGN

Updated: Oct 31

Orthodontic treatment with traditional braces involve placing brackets on each of the teeth, and then using archwires to align them. You will have appointments approximately every 4-6 weeks, and your orthodontist will make adjustments such as changing the archwires or adding elastics for bite correction. For esthetically-minded patients, white ceramic brackets are an option. Patients are able to choose the colors of the ligature ties that attach to each bracket.

In orthodontic treatment with Invisalign clear aligners, you will wear a series of clear aligners that gradually move the teeth into their ideal position. Your orthodontist will give you a set of aligners, and you will change the aligners once every 1-2 weeks. The aligners must be worn at least 22 hours per day, and must be removed while eating or drinking anything but water. You will visit your orthodontist once every 4-6 weeks for progress monitoring, adjustments, and to pick up your next set of clear aligners. Treatment with clear aligners may involve rubber bands or attachments placed on the teeth to aid in tooth movement and bite correction. Patients concerned about esthetics may opt for Invisalign, as the aligners are clear. However, it is the patient's responsibility to wear the aligners diligently and switch to the correct aligners on the schedule decided in the treatment plan.
