Dry mouth, or xerostomia, can be caused by aging, some health conditions (for example, Sjogren's Syndrome), a side effect of medications, or due to damaged salivary glands from radiation therapy.
Invisalign clear aligners may exacerbate the feeling of dry mouth. The mouth may respond to the presence of the aligners with minor irritation/swelling and reduced salivary flow.
Here are some tips to minimize the feeling of dry mouth:
Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water.
Dry mouth sprays (for example, Biotene)
Artificial saliva gel
Dry mouth rinses
Ask your dental professional about prescription medications that stimulate salivary flow (for example, Pilocarpine or Cevimeline)
If you are experiencing dry mouth, it's very important to stay up-to-date with your 6-month checkups with your general dentist. Dry mouth can predispose you to dental decay and periodontal disease.
