Orthodontic treatment in patients with a history of bisphosphonate usage should be approached with caution. Bisphosphonate usage inhibits bone resorption and the bone remodeling process, an action necessary to move teeth within the jawbone. This will cause the teeth to move very slowly, or they may not move at all. For this reason, it's very important to inform your orthodontist, prior to starting treatment, of your history taking bisphosphonates.
Some examples of common bisphosphonates include:
Reclast (Zoledronic acid)
Fosamax (Alendronate)
Aredia (Pamidronate)
Tildren (Tiludronate)
Boniva (Ibandronate)
